The State of Maine has a site for the "Great Maine Schools Project" where they are doing research on One-to-One use of Laptop computers in a High School Environment. Learning with Laptops is a site maintained by Laurie and Fred Bartels of Rye Country Day School. There is a wealth of information there about the use of laptop computers in schools. The European Schoolnet site includes their Laptop School Network where "Education Professional share ideas about the challenges of Laptop Education". The Maine Leaning Technology Initiative site has papers and news regarding the program that has begun that eventually will provide every middle school student with a laptop computer. SNAP, the Student Notebook Access Plan is a partnership between Toshiba, Australian Schools, and resellers created to promote the use of laptop computers in education.
The 1999 Toshiba/NSTA Laptop Learning Challenge rewarded K–12 educators for their innovative uses of laptop computers. The 20 selected lessons have science, mathematics, and technology components and take place in the classroom, in the field, or in informal science institutions.
The purchase price of a computer is only a fraction of the true cost of bringing a computer into your school. The book examines the differences between the children growing up today who live in a world where digital computers are common items and their parents' generation. Other interesting items from this author can be found via his web site. The Bonhoeffer Foundation is supporting The Copernicus Project. It is is a cooperative effort of seven school districts across Washington State designed to alter the education of thousands of students by placing laptop computers in their hands. The Detwiler Foundation has a "Computers For Schools Program" that is bringing donated new and used computers to schools. They started in California and are now expanding nationwide. Information about them can be found via the Madera County Office of Education and Los Angeles Educational Partnership. The CEO Forum on Education and Technology is an organization of education and business leaders. Their mission statements says that they exist "to help ensure that every child in the United States is equipped with the essential technological, critical thinking, and communications skills necessary to compete in the 21st century." The Information network of the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education (InSITE) is a site dedicated to exploring ways in which the Internet can benefit teacher education programs around the world. Classroom Connect provides information and links about the use of the Internet in grades K - 12. |
