and Financial Aid
Lakeside School announced today that it has received a
grant of $10 million from the Paul G. Allen Charitable
Foundation, to be used for the continued development and
implementation of the school's recently announced laptop
computer program for students and faculty.
"With the overwhelming generosity of the Allen family we
are able to continue in our pursuit to provide our students
with technology tools that will enhance their learning and
improve their critical thinking skills," said Bernie Noe,
director of Lakeside School. "This generous grant will be
valuable in ensuring that our students have a critical base in
skills that support their present and future learning and the
school's commitment to lifelong curiosity."
The gift will be used to build the school's technology
infrastructure including updating and expanding the wireless
network, upgrading servers, providing software licensing for
students, teachers and staff, supporting remote accessibility,
providing hands-on training and instruction, and creating a
significant endowment to build and strengthen integration of
laptop use throughout the school. The gift also makes possible
significant financial aid for students in need.
"As alumni of Lakeside we are pleased to support the school
and this innovative program," said Jody Patton, executive
director of the Paul G. Allen Charitable Foundation. "We are
proud of the Lakeside history and view this as an excellent
opportunity to advance their mission of learning and
exploration by ensuring that current and future students at
the school have the tools and technology resources they need
for a world class education."
Lakeside School announced that it would phase in its laptop
program over the next four years. Students in grade 7,8, and 9
will participate in the program during the 2001-2002 school
year with one additional grade added each year thereafter. By
the 2004-2005 school year, when the program is fully
implemented, more than 600 students in grades 7 through 12
will benefit from the program.
